Huawei donates ICT Lab to UDS

40-seater ICT Lab from Huawei to UDS


Huawei Technologies Ghana has donated a ICT laboratory to the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale as part of its focus on creating opportunities for Ghanaians through education.

The laboratory is one of four Huawei promised the late President John Atta Mills during his visit to Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China in September 2010.

A statement from Huawei said the four cost a total of US$1million, adding that the company has already donated the first three labs to the Universities of Cape Coast and of Ghana, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

The UDS lab is the fourth laboratory to be donated to a Ghanaian public university in full accomplish of the promise to the late president.

The statement said the lab is equipped with 40 computers, switches, firewall software, a projector and tables and chairs, and it is design to help the students gain practical and hands-on experience with ICT softwares and equipment.

It said: “Huawei will engage some of the students in their annual 8-week industrial attachment or internship, national service placements and prospective job offers. Huawei will also provide possible research projects, telecommunication networks and devices design and development, software development or other related areas of interest for the students.”

This donation, the statement said, was part of Huawei’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to impart positive changes especially in the field of education.

Meanwhile, after the presentatiton of the lab, the team from Huawei joined the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Gong Jianzhong to pay a courtesy call on the Gukpe-Naa of Tamale.

They were received to a durbar of chiefs and people of Gukpe.

The Ambassador later told journalists he was grateful for the reception and pledged China's continued commitment to giving Ghana development assistance.

Gukpe-Naa was also excited to have received the Chinese delegation and also appealed to the Ambassador to bring more projects to Tamale.

Amabassador Jianzhong also paid a courtesy call on the Northern Regional Minister later the same day.
