Waste Management Company Zoomlion Ghana Limited is embarking on an exercise to de-silt and dredge all major drains and water ways in Kumasi to protect lives and property.
The exercise follows needless deaths caused by flooding in Kumasi. Four people have died and one child is still missing to floods in the last one week since the rains started in Kumasi.
City Authorities among other measures to prevent flooding, are considering demolishing buildings sited on water ways.
But Zoomlion rather wants city authorities to enforce their by-laws against indiscriminate dumping of waste in drains.
The company says its investigations into the cause of flooding in Kumasi and Accra point to choked drains as a result of indiscriminate dumping of waste.
Public Relations Officer for Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Robert Coleman cited instances where shop owners on a daily basis use the drains as a dumping ground for used cartons and plastic wrappers.
He said when the authorities enforce their own laws many of these floods will be mitigated.
