President John Mahama has described the late former Vice President of Ghana, Alhaji Aliu Mahama, as an honourable man whose demise has afforded Ghanaians another opportunity to unite.

He said the former veep - whose death was announced Friday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital was “always a moderate voice in the often heated political discourse that characterized the times.”

The President was paying tribute to Alhaji Aliu Mahama at a funeral ceremony held at the Independence Square in Accra Sunday.

Mr Mahama said the former vice president “distinguished himself as the longest serving vice president yet in Ghana’s democratic history… A capable acting president in the absence of his boss (former President Kufuor).”

Mr Mahama added that it was Aliu Mahama’s “sense of discipline” that led him to launch a nationwide campaign for greater discipline while serving as vice president under the erstwhile Kufuor administration.

“May God give us the strength to bear this grief, the unity to transcend this sadness and the healing to remain steadfast in the pursuit of the greater good of our nation and our people,” the President prayed.
