Golden Baobab (a pan-African literary NGO) in partnership with the International Board of Books for Young people Ghana (IBBY Ghana) has made a presentation to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) Children’s Ward.

The presentation consisted of over two hundred African children’s books, a furniture set and a colorful bookcase for the playrooms of the children’s block.

Golden Baobab’s Executive Director, Deborah Ahenkorah, made the formal presentation at Korle Bu and emphasized the importance of ensuring that young children have access to children’s books which reflect their cultural identities.

In a short speech, Ms. Ahenkorah explained that Golden Baobab’s vision is to create a world filled with wonder and possibility with one African children’s story at a time. She added that Golden Baobab looks forward to partnering with organizations who want to realise this vision all over Africa.

Prof. Bamenla Goka, the Head of Child Health at KBTH, received the donation on behalf of the children’s department and expressed hope that children, especially those who stayed in the wards for extended periods of time, would find enjoyment in taking full advantage of the donated African children’s books.

She washappy about Golden Baobab’s work because she believed it important for children in Africa to not only read about foreign cultures but to also be able to see themselves and their stories in beautiful children’s books.

This project was made possible through the kind support of the Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC), Smartline Publishers, Sub-Saharan Publishers and African Christian Press.
